Poverty in America today means whatever statisticians in Washington say it means. And we rarely stop to see what definition of poverty is used. Check out the Just Thinking Podcast from 3/11/2020. In that episode, the hosts discuss the ambiguities in the definition of poverty. They brilliantly point out that one of the most powerful tools in modern discussions is to use vague language to insinuate what you cannot prove with evidence . They point out that a Brookings Institute study showed that if the World Bank’s definition for poverty worldwide was used for the United States, the US poverty rate would be zero.
